Keep them at their best

Care that extends every pair.

A little regular care goes a long way. MAHER shoes are made from materials that respond well to attention — and age beautifully when given it.

The basics

A few minutes. A longer life.

Quality footwear is an investment. How you treat it between wears determines how long it stays looking and feeling its best. Below is everything you need to keep your MAHER shoes in excellent condition.

Leather Care

  • Wipe clean after each wear with a soft, dry cloth
  • Apply a quality leather conditioner every 4–6 weeks or when leather begins to feel dry
  • Use a leather-appropriate polish to restore colour and shine — test on a hidden area first
  • Buff with a clean horsehair brush after polishing
  • Use a waterproofing spray at the start of each season for protection against moisture
  • Allow to dry naturally — never near direct heat

Suede Care

  • Brush regularly with a suede brush to lift the nap and remove surface dust
  • Treat marks and scuffs with a suede eraser before they set
  • Apply a suede protector spray before first wear and re-apply seasonally
  • Never apply standard leather conditioner or polish to suede
  • If suede gets wet, allow to dry fully before brushing — never force-dry
  • For stubborn marks, seek professional suede cleaning

Drying & Moisture

  • Never place shoes near radiators, heaters, or in direct sunlight to dry
  • Stuff with newspaper or cedar shoe trees to maintain shape during drying
  • Allow at least 24–48 hours for thorough drying after heavy moisture exposure
  • Once dry, condition leather to restore suppleness lost through wetting
  • For waterlogged shoes, remove insoles and dry separately

Storage

  • Store in the dust bag provided to protect from dust and light
  • Use cedar shoe trees when not wearing — they absorb moisture and hold shape
  • Store upright in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight
  • Avoid stacking shoes on top of one another — it distorts the shape over time
  • For long-term storage, condition before boxing and check seasonally

Cleaning Soles

  • Wipe rubber outsoles with a damp cloth after wear in dirty or wet conditions
  • Use a soft brush with mild soap for embedded dirt in the outsole tread
  • Never submerge shoes in water — this can weaken adhesive bonds and warp the last
  • Allow soles to dry fully before wearing again after cleaning

Professional Repair

  • Seek a cobbler for heel and sole replacement before wear reaches the upper
  • Stitching repairs and edge refinishing should be done by a professional
  • MAHER shoes are designed for resoling — quality construction supports repair
  • Contact our customer care team for recommended repair specialists in New Zealand and Australia

Our recommended products: We recommend a quality leather conditioner (such as Renapur or Leather Master), a horsehair brush, cedar shoe trees, and a season-appropriate protector spray for suede and smooth leather. Contact our team for specific brand recommendations.
